Substandard Architecture

Talk about FUGLY! Emblematic of the type of structures United Homes of New York loves to construct... This image comes from an article in the City Paper about garage enabled row home construction in the Queens Village neighborhood of Philadelphia, & the fight against it. I love how modern is used here as a pejorative.
According to O'Donnell, even the city's temporary moratorium on demolishing historic buildings in this district hasn't stopped the garages. The moratorium is easily circumvented, he says, by reconstructing in phases. "They'll leave a toothpick, and build around it," he says, pointing at a new, modern facade that slipped past the historic moratorium.
Here are some really sexy images from Foxtons real estate listings of new construction in New York City, usually United related, mostly in impoverished outer borough neighborhoods. Substandard design, materials, and expectations... Just what the ghetto needs, right?

thank you so much for showcasing the drek that united homes slaps up and tries to pass off as 'homes' and 'architecture'. the quality of new york's architecture is so far below that of most other american cities... it really sickens and saddens me. piece of shit developers like united homes are just consigning these neighborhoods to another 25 years of low-value stagnation.

several of these are in my area. While I'll take these eyes-sores to projects any day of the week, do they really have to be *that* ugly ? I agree: they're not helping the 'hood.

they are hideous. there are so many of them being built in central brooklyn--plus they want $600-700K for some of them. Ugh indeed!

The Clinton Hill Village on Kent St. has that same crapy look.
But, sometimes I look at some brownstone row-houses and wonder if when these were first built , what did the public at that time think of these appartment looking so similar and plain (plain for that time?)?
But honestly, is it so hard to bulid a decent design on budget? Builders need to learn more about design, and designers need to learn more about building.
